Recovery disk on external hardrive

Hi
Can someone tell me, step by step please, how do I make a recovery disk (with my operating system on it) to an external hard drive.

I have a iso burner image thing I downloaded and used that to make a ubuntu disk. he he he.

But I need to make one for my windows vista.

My laptop got a virus. It's blank now, I cleaned it fully. I lost the back up disc for it. Can I make a back up disk on an external hard drive to put on my lap top from my PC.

Do you mean the installation CD? If yes then I think you have to buy the os again.
