Raspberry pi custom kernel

I customized a kernel as I needed to to support a usb monitor. I was following the raspberry pi foundation's documentation on how to do it, but when I got to writing it to an sd card, the only directions are for a NOOBS sd. While I have a NOOBS sd, I also partitioned my own. Do I need to write it to an sd that already has an OS, or can I put it on a blank SD? I've looked around at different sources, but I can't find anything on this subject. Any help would be nice

You can just write it to a blank SD card you just need the program to do it.

Here is the guide for Windows. It's more difficult to find on the site nowadays.
