My Compaq Presario Laptop Wont Boot Or System Recovery

I have a Compaq Presario C700 laptop that my family has had for 3 or 4 years and a couple of months ago my sister was using and then all of a sudden it turned off. So then we had a look at it and it was asking for the OS disk's. I thought that system recovery would work but it didn't it says its missing a file but cannot recall So can anyone help with this issue. Does anyone know how much it could cost to get a new disk from Compaq?
