Manually setting screen resolutions in Windows 7

I picked up a Starlogic M17ANA monitor at an auction, bought a power supply of ebay, and it has always worked since then, but this monitor has a history of not exactly being "plug and play".

If you just hook it up, it will default to 1024x768 and 68 hertz, and you have to set it to 1280x1024 and 60 hertz via unhiding modes the monitor cannot display.

Now I have a dual monitor setup on my compaq, with another 1280x1024 17" monitor. I can set it to 60 hertz and 1024x768, but not 1280x1024.
I have tried setting the maximum attributes in vision control panel to 1280x1024 overriding driver defaults, but the windows resolution changer does not give me any 1280x1024 options to set the monitor at.

Any help appreciated :)

Also, if anyone could tell me how to stretch my games on the 2 monitos, ie 2560x1024, that would make my day :)
