Firewall problem, unable to update

I've been having this problem now for a few months - my system caught a bug, I did the usual cleanup such as glary, superantispyware, crap cleaner and malwarebytes. Got the computer up and running again. Problem is, I can't do any updates of most kinds (but not all), and have some difficulty uploading as well. For example, I try to update photoshop - I get the error: "No connection. Please check your internet settings and/or firewall" - this is pretty typical, with the errors often referring to the firewall. I've turned the firewall off and it makes no difference. I haven't made any changes (that I know of!). I'm running XP sp3, AMD 3000 (old but works), AVG (which can update for some reason). Any thoughts? I'd hate to reload XP as it's working well otherwise...but I'm pretty well stumped. Not a lot of info on this problem out there...thanks for any suggestions.

You can try Uninstalling the firewall and try updating stuff to see if it works
