Does anyone know of a video converter?

Well I need to convert files like, movies to mp4 because they're all avi. And I already have that Hamster video converter ****, but it jacks the videos up because the sound and video dont match up after it's converted. And it pisses me off. So I need to know if anyone knows of a good video converter that I can download. I already tried uploading files to the internet, but they were too big and BLAH~!!! Please help. Thanks in advance.

The best video trans-coder that I've found is Handbrake. It is open source and there are versions for Windows, Linux, and MAC operating systems.
