Computer Locking up.

A few minutes after initializing downloads, my computer locks up. Mouse won't move, keyboard unresponsive (including CTRL+ALT+DEL), and even the power button is unresponsive. I have to unplug and reconnect the power just to restart. Any ideas?

I had a computer that did that everytime there was a small surge or powerloss.

or could possibly be disk i/o maxing out, Does the HD activity light come on and stay on when the freeze happens?

What did you download and run? And I guess more importantly, where from? You could have downloaded some malware.

I second what iPwn said (name change? had me confused for a bit )

Crashing can be caused by bad memory - but it would be random rather than 'after initializing downloads'. I also agree with what JCB says - you could boot to recovery console and chkdsk /r and/or defragment.
