Audio Problems

I have a Hp Pavilion Dv6 Vista 64 bit computer that if i plug in earbuds or a headset, i cant listen to anything, but if a song is already playing then i can. If i try to open up a browser and run a game or even change the song, it makes the sound switch to the speakers instead of on the headphones. If anyone knows how to fix it, I would be truly grateful.

right click volume control at the bottom, goto adjust audio properties.. on the audio tab click, default: your headphones.. then click advanced under the headphones option, click performance and then click default. Press OK
