ok well his wifi wasnt working very well and he has one of these things connected to his mac.

ok so well i took the top of some metal box and started bending it into a satellite shape, and then put a hole big enough for the usb cable in the centre. i inserted the wifi adapter there and i pointed it at the router direction and now the internet is really fast

Yup. People tweak with Wi-Fi all the time. I think the farthest Wi-Fi 802.11g transmission was about 1.5 miles, set in Las Vegas at some trade show where everyone sees who can get the farthest/best Wi-Fi connection or whatnot.
