Unstable limestone formations, which wash out during severe rain simply because the ground can't handle all the moisture. That's basically how a sinkhole happens in a nutshell. Poor piping had very little, if anything, to do with this. The area is filled with a lot of caverns filled with limestone. Look up Karst Formations.
