I watched "Donnie Darko" today. Really awesome movie.

Never in a million years would a fantasy movie change my life. I don't watch many movies, most are utter rubbish. The ones I do watch I watch purely for entertainment. For me my life is almost perfect. Peace in the world and the demise of the idiots running the show is all I need. Fantasy movies cannot acheive that I'm afraid.

I wouldn't write off fiction or fantasy as a genre, because sometimes it can act as a useful vehicle for pushing a poweful social message. When "fantasy" movies highlight social issues that spill into the real world and that's when things get really intertesting.

Think about how "1984" depicted the idea of a state with dictated media and constant surveillance becomes more and more plausible in the modern age. To have predicted that years before digital media... That's a powerful movie.

(... And yeah I know 1984 was a book first, but it highlights a point!)
