He might have modelled Armani suits but England goalkeeper David James went home from training in a new fashion accessory yesterday – a blue Reliant Robin.

The Portsmouth star was forced to drive home in the 1992 Reliant Robin after being named the worst trainer for the week.

A host of Portsmouth players chipped in to buy the car in blue (Pompey's colour) as an incentive to work harder in training.

Although we doubt the millionaire FA Cup winners would have had to dig deep into their pockets – the Reliant wouldn't have cost more than a couple of hundred quid.

Complete with a huge red spoiler and a loudspeaker which plays animal sounds, James is now required to drive the car to training every day for a week until someone new takes on the title.

However, it's unlikely the England international will drive the car home each day as he lives in Devon – more than 130 miles away from the club's training ground.

Our pictures show the 6ft 4 stopper tightly cocooned inside the battered motor which comes complete with a vase of daffodils on the dash board.

It's a far cry from the star's normal method of transport – a Chrysler 300C which has been converted to run on rapeseed oil.

The committed environmentalist made the conversion after realising the 50,000 miles a year he was driving was making up 40 per cent of his carbon dioxide emissions – leading him to be nicknamed The Jolly Green Giant.
