Unhappy Anyone else see something strange here?

I have been noticing, along with a few others, that our viewers have increased by hundreds in the past few weeks. Right now, I just noticed about 500+ guest viewers and maybe only 22 actual members.

I am somewhat worried about this. We may be expecting a spam attack to the likes of which no one has ever seen on CF before. Something worse than Furby (I joined after the Furby incident, but I have heard stories) or George combined.

Any guest viewer that is not a spammer, please, step forward and join this awesome community!!! We are interested in hearing from you! If you are having a problem, we can help you. If you just need a group of unique people to talk to, here we are!

I know this has been bought up before, but this is starting to get to me.

Oh of course Bud! But heres my take on it. This forums servers are horrendous, They suck to be completely honest? Do the forums get upgraded? Even when I offer to pay for the upgrades, Nope.. We do however get the infamous "How is it now or Are things getting better" speeches from David. We have the option to do CAPTCHA, We've flirted with the idea and brought it up before, Will we ever incorporate the feature into this forum, Probly not.

I hate to sound like I'm complaining here, But the problems of this forum are 210% preventable along with the security measures we can take to prevent what you, myself and some others are strongly concerned about recently.

But Hey, Not to worry, Because when shit does hit the fan, There's only one person to point fingers at and I can guarantee you there's going to be more than one saying "I told you so."

I don't see how you members would be to blame. It's not like you are the spammer.

But don't think your alone. Your worries are shared with us. Putting in basic security mesures here would be nice. As mean as it sounds, I would much rather deal with the drama you guys cause than with spam.

Totally agreed. CF's software is rather pathetic compared to some other forums I use.

Well, i do like the fact that email has to be confirmed before signing up rather than using the captia. honestly, i hate capti. Because of my visual impairment, it is quite difficult to see the letters.

If David is thinking of ever emplementing captia, he should have an audible one as well. With audible captia, there is a link that one can click under the actual image so that those with trouble seeing could have the captia played to them. It is not hard to do. I would be more than happy to walk him through it if he'd like since one of my specialties is consulting with developers to make websites and software accessible for the blind and physical handicap.

Examples of sites with such audible features are;
www.google.om
www.blogspot.com
www.craigslist.net
www.hotmail.com
These are just some examples.

And, I hate spammers as much as the next person.

we can't live our lives in fear of spam attacks, just do the best we can to prevent them.

the 500 guest viewing figures are also inflated by search bots. i think guests are probably counted on either session or IP, so a big searcher like google could have perhaps ten or more guest connections as it does it's crawling.

some simple measures can stop spam bots (which would also account for some guest connections.

I imaine that there are also some lurkers, quite a few people tend to read some forums and come back. and register later.

other will be brought here by google searches of how to fix their problems and come back later.

The large amount of guests are spiders from Yahoo updating its index of our pages.

AmericanSensei, give me a break. We are running vbulletin 3.6.5, 3.7.0 is STILL in beta testing so what would be the point in upgrading? Even when it is in a production release, there is always going to be later builds available but do you think it is practical to take down the forums, backup the db, and upgrade everything each time vbulletin does a weekly build? I don't think so and no one would want that. So shut up about upgrades, just shut up for 6 months about upgrades and when a significant upgrade appears that has a new feature then its time to talk about upgrades.

Install a captcha? Like everyone I do have a life and full time job outside of CF so forgive me if it doesn't get installed the second someone requests it.

haha, I was wondering when you were going to get blunt.
So whats the deal with these white screens then? Updating every week would be pointless, yes, but if you updated once, and it got rid of those screens, it would be worth it.

Is it something else that causes it, not the software?...

I thought the captcha was a simple option in the admin cp?

and all those spiders? my gosh, yahoo is going nuts.... I wouldn't think we'd have that many spiders for us.... I thought it'd be like 10 or 20.... 100 maybe.... but 500!!?!??!

no, the graphics library for PHP needs to be installed, then PHP needs to be configured to use it.

then the option needs to be turned on.

*sigh*

you misunderstand,

it is built into VBulletin, just like it's built into mybb and phpbb et al...

the trouble is not that david can't click a check box, the trouble is that the graphics generation (GD2.dll) that lives in the php\extensions folder is not there...

additionally the PHP.ini file is not setup to use this library, (cause it's missing).

basically mybb wouldn't work in this situation either.
