The flaw in your logic here is I know my snizzle but don't post much. Does that mean I'm not trustworthy? If that's the case you can watch me log out for the last time and never come back...

Quoting out of context is not a good thing. You have to look at the statement as a whole to see what I was driving at.

no. but by that same metric someone with only a single post isn't necessarily not to be trusted. on a technical level the fact that a moderator is a moderator does not mean that they should be trusted to provide technical advise.
and it's a sad fact that the old rep system was more a measure of how much a person was liked more than what they knew.

there has to be some kind of scale, and crude as it is, this tanks system is probably the one that'll end up being used.

besides, it's also the case that whilst you do not post here much, what you do say tends to be insightful. so you'd have disproportionately high thanks for the amount of posts you made.

so a new member with 10 posts and 10 thanks is probably a good indication that they can be trusted.
on the other hand a member with a million posts, but no thanks is probably a good indicator that either member does not usually help people out, or does not usually give good/correct advice.

(though admittedly that does rather mean that there is a problem for existing members with high posts counts who will all start out with no thanks messages.)

on the other hand, like I've said many times before, if you can get rep/tanks from anywhere, then what's the point? the fact that I could get more rep from a post in the social lounge for making a joke, than I could get in the hardware section where simple advice might save someone hours of time and hundreds of dollars made the whole system a bit useless for judging peoples ability for giving technical advice.

Since we don't have the system yet:

No one is going to be able to see the amount of thanks anyone else has so that point becomes redundant.

So then we're right back at square one...
If you want to send a private message of thanks to a member, why not use the pre-existing private message system?

This is why I think that some public system is needed as you outline - whether that's the idea of public thanks or the idea of rep as we had it. Sure, those systems have their flaws and they're not perfect by any stretch - but they're better than nothing or just relying on post count, which is what people will tend to do otherwise.

Guys, you are over thinking this system. This isn't Stack Overflow or Quora. It's just a simple system to say thanks to someone who posts something of quality that you agree with. At this point we have no plans to create a public facing system to validate who is more or less knowledgeable.

I'd respectfully disagree here and actually say the opposite - I personally think you're under-thinking it. On pretty much any forum new members especially will look for a means of validating who is more or less knowledgeable, and if a reputation system isn't in place they'll fall back to things like post count to try and work this out (it's only natural really - if you've joined somewhere you want a rough measure of seeing if the person who's giving you advice is trustworthy or not.) So essentially what you'll have by removing a public reputation system is still a reputation system of sorts, but one that implicitly works on post count rather than thanks or an actual reputation score.

Further to that you're actually reinforcing post count as a system of reputation by using the titles such as "Fully Optimized" and "Golden Master" - that fully and somewhat deliberately implies that someone with a high post count is more knowledgeable than someone without!

I don't believe the old system was necessarily the best way of doing things, but it was step up from post count, which is what we're pretty much going back to. As said already a private "thanks" system is really no different from sending a PM, which we have in place already if we choose to use it.

Don't take this the wrong way - I'm not having a go. In a lot of other areas I like what you guys have done, the new logo and theme is much better, we haven't had any security issues since you took over and the site's seemed snappy enough to me! I just think the currently proposed system isn't the best thing for the forums for the reasons I and others have outlined.

I suspect that the only way we'll ever know is to try the thanks system It's important to note that it's been developed and used before and that it was well received. It's often hard to envision how something will work until you actually try it and so I encourage you to keep an open mind about this.

I have tried it on another forum. And I still agree with Berry. I just don't see the point of it. It is no different really to a pm.

The system that will be installed is a bit different. We have customized it and had great results. It's very fast and easy to use (waaay faster than a PM), promotes great posting and can be fun. It's not mandatory to use the messaging component. I know that I'm new here but I would not have suggested it if I thought it would be a dis-improvement.

All this over a rep system, it doesn't matter to much, we need more members for bigger rep features, we don't have alot of members to waste time on a complicated rep system

Come on guys.....

The mods are gonna do what they want and we will just have to wait and see how it works. Until then there's no point in debating this anymore.
