I don't think a chat room would really attract many members, dead as it is (no offence and good luck with that =] - PS I don't mean this sarcastically) but would indeed love it, but better perhaps to be honest in my opinion - would be a chatbox. At least people shout things out. I understand that you wouldn't want this as a replacement for threads, but on the other hand may attract newbies as it may create a more friendly atmosphere than it already is =]

Chat rooms besides chewing up bandwidth like it's going out of style, also require heavy moderation as they can be a haven for spammers. Besides if you're discussing computers in the chat room it doesn't help any one else.
Shout boxes are just ugly. See above.

This has been brought before and not everyone agrees with it, I do agree with it but not many will support it and as Setishock said they can be a lot of work to maintain.

Hmmm yea I do understand what you're saying but how would you feel about just having an ignore button for every user ?? For spam and if you dont like someone cos they're harassing you or something. Ignore so you dont see anything they post

I mean the ban feature exists to keep out trolls and spammers in the first place, and im sure people can be mature enough just like in real life - what do you do if you dont like someone? Yes the forums is a different story as people ask for help, but i believe chat rooms should be unmoderated but with an ignore button. not to be disrespectful or anything, but we're not little kids.

I think I'm one of the few active members who's been around long enough to remember when the members tried to prove the admin wrong and start one of their own up to show that it'd work. For the first week it was popular and well maintained. Then, it crashed faster than Miley Cyrus's image as members lost interest.

I was for it then, but now I just don't see how the same won't happen again.

I imagine this ending the same way as previous chat services, or the facebook group etc.

if I'm proved wrong then fair enough.

you'd think that people should be mature enough to not post spam.

but what happens is that people have some fight over some stupid thing, then they start swearing so the thread is closed,
but they can't just take the locking of the thread as a cue to stop going on about something or stop arguing, so they make a new thread, or continue the argument in some other thread they are temporarily banned for a week.
but they can't just take their week off and create a second account to continue the argument,
so then they are permanently banned.

then they'll come along with a new account and be banned a few times more.

then they'll go away for a month or two.

then they come back and try sending the admins a message saying I've changed my ways can I come back. -but they are told no, because permanent bans well they are generally permanent so their new account is also banned.

and then comes the many many accounts and the swearing and the porn, etc...

then there are the people who only sign up to advertise their site or product, or who are being paid to advertise a site of a product.

I agree with what you're saying, in a perfect world of adults and grown ups, or at the very least mature people a chatbox/shout box wouldn't need to be moderated.

but by the same token, in that perfect world the whole forum wouldn't need moderation either.

Um @root I think you have misundestood me terribly. I didn't say people are mature not to POST SPAM; I said people should be mature enough to IGNORE the spam, swearing, etc. I mean we are all adults here so whatever happens in a chat room - if someone doesn't like them cos of the swearing spam etc. then why not just block the user ?? have a function you don't see any of the person you want to block out 's messages. but you do need to ban people from forums cos that's to help people which would detract users.

Actually, most of our member base is pretty young...
yea I did notice that, but by adults I mean: 'mature enough to handle spam and trolling'. A lot of young people use facebook, twitter, etc. where all we do is just ignore taunting messages/posts and unfriend/block nasty people who are just there to be weird/harass us.
