Question Making a server

I have 3 computers on my home network and I'm looking to build a basic server to run my cable modem through and just load tons of firewall crap and all sorts of things on it. Do I really need a server OS? Or can I just use a basic operating system? Will it really make a difference if basically all I'm using it for is one big firewall. If I were to just put a normal OS on it how compatable is linux with Windows XP Pro? Is it easy to set up a home network between the two different OS?

Windows XP Pro can do it; but in general terms Windows 2003 Server is so much more safe anyway. If you're loading loads of Firewall stuff onto it then Pro will probably do the job.

use linux or a bsd.

its perfectly easy to set up a *nix/windows network, they all understand tcpip (even if one of them doesnt always behave as it should)

Yeah; Linux is a little unruly But at least it still works on TCPIP, even if it doesn't conform to Microsoft's rules.

I will have to agree your best bet for a server is linux and you can get it for free.

You shouldn't be admitting you took a Server 2003 all the way.

You should use linux (unix or any available linux). People who don't like *nix/linux, why don't ask microsoft if they use their own work. hehehe

Microsoft Servers are more and more using Linux and Unix for their Operating System - it is an innefficient waste of money to change Server OS while its still working; as a Linux Server packs in, a Windows Server takes its place. It would be pointless to do otherwise, eh?

Oh; I wasn't talking about the usefulness of a Linux/Unix or Windows Server - you just said that Microsoft don't use as many Windows Servers as Linux Servers - I was attempting to answer that question.

I don't generally get into Windows Server Conversations unless its about that.

well when I had cpanel/unix my server was bloated. and was really slow considering the 10 IP backbone connectivity and one of cisco's latest routers and switches. I doubt if they even had a Gig NIC in that server.
