How does Alcohol 120% work?

Well, a friend recommended me alcohol 120% for making copies of programs on cds and dvds. I want to know what exactly does it do? Is it like bit torrent?

i always thought alcohol 120% was just an emulation program
... *googles*, oh it copies aswell. thats cool
