Default does anyone here have a really strict school system?

i was just wandering if anyones school system is as strict as mine here (budmouth technology college, weymouth, UK) because i cannot seem to access any page at-all, alll that pops up is a pic and says its too dangerouse!

the problem is, that it is getting beyond the joke now, there even thinking of blocking google!!!!

what i really want to know is what is it about these sites that makes the school system see them as threatening?

Dunno, yeah my school filter is pretty strict too. Everything I like is catagorized as hate speech or criminal skills.

From a user side, I can see your frustration. From a network admin side, I see the need to secure the school network. There are many security threats out there, and the school has to defend against them. Down-time on any network cost money, resources, and a lot of frustration. All because someone wanted to see a picture, or something. If your at school, you should be doing school stuff anyway, not browsing the net, unless the class is about the Internet.

I work for the school district in my city and I hammer on students who are playing games or going to innapropriate websites. It seems like the more games they play the more time I spend imaging computers!!!

But even I get frusterated but our districts Proxy server.

Some filters are really damn strong, like someones filter might not let this site up because i used the word "damn." I've pretty much the assistant tech at our High School. Our filter isn't that bad. Its blocks really harsh stuff like "porn, sex, F***, etc." Its a big list of words that are filtered. But in the old days of netscape explorer, the old filter wouldn't let nasa.com pop up. It was insanely stupid.

Edit-
Yeah, before i was in computers, i would get mad when one of our game sites got blocked. But now i realize that so much crap can infect the computers or is just waste of space on the school server.

the people at my school are so stupid with computers.... i asked my computer class teacher how many gigs of ram the processor had and he said, "i will have to get back to you on that one." lol. what an idiot! and the next day he said to me, "ya, actually i learned that processors dont have ram." oh my god. and they hired this idiot to teach us about computers. he also thinks wmv stands for "windows microsoft videos." well anyway, ya i dont even think my school even knows how to block a web page.

Your computers/servers and whatever must suck you have people like that. We don't have computer classes since we aren't big enough so i go in at study halls and learn from our tech guy. And he is one smart computer nerd.

^^^ Our school tech all work for the board, and only come into schools when nesscary. Actually, they don't come into schools when nesscary. Their last visit to cable something was supposed to be 6 months ago.

Anyways our filters block alot of stuff. We block all the good stuff like hotmail and myspace for one. Than my two favourite catagories get blocked as well, which include Criminal Skills (Lock Picking, Hacking) and Hate Speech (Anything that is anti-conservative)

Also our primary server only has 300 gig and we have 1100 students, we have an issue of overflowing the server. But I recently added a 200 gig server for a single class, so that helps.

Pray tell why you would need and more than 50MB?

*considering your school network space should be for your scholo stuff, not pictures/movies files etc...*

Pictures and movies are used daily for educational reasons

Our college uses many techniques to monitor/detect/snoop on whats going on. They use "Vision Client" which is like remote desktop on Windows Server - it allows you to see whats going on on ppl's computers without them knowing anything. The thing is though I cracked the HDD protection on a staff computer and copied the whole program across to my account including all the DLL's and reg keys etc!

great it's good to know we have professional hackers in our school systems ready to test our security configurations after a hard day of calculus.

Where I used to work, we had Websense. It blocked quite a bit. It blocked all the inappropriate sites, and you could manually enter blocks to the filter. It sometimes blocked web pages from Lyrics.com to show up because of the content of the lyrics. But there's those sites to get around the filter. What you need to do about those is manually block those; sites like pureprivacy.com and shysurfer.com. Those sites could bypass any filter, at schools and other workplaces. Then you can keep the people within their boundaries.

Just use a proxy guys. It's so easy to get around filters these days.
