i have 2 servers
one is a private minecraft server
and the other is going to be a media server

the minecraft server is running 32bit XP on a P4 HT
i would like to be able to use the remote desktop feature from vista to this box
i have given it a static IP address
but i still cannot control it over the lan
right now i use logmein to remote desktop into it
but thats rather annoying
it has to go out to a server then back down to my server
any suggestions

now on to my media server
its running W7 home premium 64bit
i have given it a static IP address as well
but i still cannot remote desktop into it
this one is going to have this
which im hopeing that i can remote desktop into
and use the program to record my BluRays to my HDD in any media format that i want to
this is because of several reasons
* one is that im tired of the possibility of scratching a disk
* im tired of changeing disks or hunting them down
* and lastly the BluRay ROM that i have plays only half of my BluRays
so thats irrating

im just not understanding why i cannot remote desktop into these boxes
all of these machines are in my bedroom
and im using a 7 port Gigabit switch to handle the network traffic
could that be the issue?
thanks for any help guys

Remote Desktop is not supported on any home editions of Windows. You would need XP Pro, Vista Business or Ultimate and 7 Professional or Ultimate to be able to remote into them.

so if its not supported
then why is it under the accessories menu?

and what is that link you have at the bottom of your post? george

Your W7 Home Premium machine has Remote Desktop Connection (client software) in accessories so that you have the ability to remote into other machines that have RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol - server software) installed. However, other machines are unable to remote back into your W7 Home Premium machine, because W7 Home Premium does not come with RDP installed. MS figures that home users don't have need to remote into their Home Premium machines, therefore RDP is not included.

There are ways to enable RDP on your Home Premium machine, but you'll have to google it.

Or you can try a free alternative

RealVNC - VNC® remote access and control technology
