Need a new router?

I just noticed that I get way higher download speeds when connected through ethernet (either directly into the cable modem or through the WRT54G v4 w/DD-WRT). I get 24+Mbps via ethernet, and around 14Mbps through wifi.

Should I get a new router? Would a basic N router let me achieve the same speeds through ethernet but through wifi?

No that is normal. N might be better, but wireless is so iffy that i can't say that it will be better or not.

^ What he said.

It's possible you'd get a better speed through n than via cat5 - but it's also entirely possible it'd be just as slow (especially if you go for the cheapest thing you can find.) Also bear in mind that unless your devices all support n then you're unlikely to see any difference!
