Laptop not connecting to internet

I have a Dell Inspiron laptop that isn't connecting to the internet. When I try to repair the connection it says: could not renew IP address. Not sure what that means.

The connection is through a linksys; the main household computer is directly connected to the modem. We have another desktop upstairs that uses a router plugged into the wall, which i guess receives the linksys's signals.

Don't know much about computers...had this problem a few weeks ago and it resolved itself in a couple days.

Any settings I need to change on my laptop??

We need to know a little bit more about your setup.

You have a modem (provided by your ISP) and a Linksys router?
The router is upstairs?
Do you have one downstairs as well?
One desktop is plugged into the modem and the other into the upstairs router?
What is the router upstairs plugged into?
Is there just one router or two?
Are you trying to connect wirelessly or hard-wired?

Most likely the easiest thing to do is to power cycle the modem and router. Unplug both devices, leave them out for 20-ish seconds, plug in the modem, wait 10-ish seconds, plug in the router. See if that allows you to connect. However, even if that fixes it, there might be a deeper issue and answering the above questions will help us determine what they might be.

i had the same problem,i have an ibm thinkpad t23 laptop, try going into your bios and resetting to the factory defaults
