Is it possible when sending an email using Gmail, to tag it in some way so that you know when it has been read.

The feature you are asking about is called a "read receipt". It is not an included feature in the free version of Gmail but is only available in the paid versions.

From Gmail Help:

Read receipts are available only for Google Apps for Work, Education, and Government customers. They are not available in personal Gmail accounts.

Check with yahoo and msn. They may still be doing that.
