XP start up

Hi

When I boot up XP it gets as far as " windows is starting up" screen and stay's there

If I restart in safe mode and go to control panel/user accounts and change "the way users log on" so as not to use "welcome screen" it boots up fine apart from it telling me "system could not log you on make sure user name & domain are correct"
When I close this box it starts OK

All this seemed to happen after installing windows updates, is this just coincidence

Can anybody tell me how to fix this

if you dont have any valuebal crap on there i would just try to repair windows using the xp cd if that dont work just format. if someone else has a better idea plz do tell
