Question Wireless router and Ethernet cables???

I just bought a router to enable other computers to use the cable internet system that I have, only to discover that my system is having a problem with ethenet cables. My computer and modem have the outlets for the cables, but when I use internet explorer, I get an instant freeze. I turn off the computer switch back to a usb cable from my modem to my computer, and everything is fine. So then, how can a switch in the type of cable cause a program to freeze???
