Wireless Connection Problem

Hi, I am having a recurring problem with establishing a wireless Laptop connection from any location away from my home network. I can still make a connection at home with no problems but when I am away at my favorite coffee shop, I get the slashed network connection icon and a message stating "Network Cable Unplugged". A month ago this was not a problem and I have not made any changes to my Laptop configuration. Also, someone suggested that I should remove all firewalls and antivirus software from my system and see what happens. I did and still have the same problem. At this point, I'm at the head-scratching stage and considerating seeing how this laptop would survive a 5 story toss from my window, ala David Letterman (back when he was funny). Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Btw, my machine is a Compaq Armada M700 using Windows 2000 Professional. Its an old machine but I need it operational til the beginning of next year when I'll get my overdue upgrade.
