In mid-August, AMD will also begin shipping the 4870 X2 (RV770XT) GPU to partners wishing to design custom cards, the sources added.

I've heard a few reviews say it, but what does it mean?

The 4870 X2s will be released at end of July, Start of August right?

Nobody really know the launch date, AMD has only said that R700 would come 8 weeks after the HD 4850/HD 4870 launch (June 25th), but anything could happen, it could be delayed or it could be pushed forward.

What I heard was the AMD would be giving partners a lot of freedom with the cards, and that there would be a reference design, but everyone would be free to bring out non reference cards, with GDDR3/GDDR5, 1GB/2GB, custom cooling etc.

I would expect launch to be at anytime during August.
