Make sure that all cables are plugged in properly and that the case isn't shorting anything around it, like touching the motherboard or chewing cables etc....could be a coincidence that it stops when the case is off

EDIT: also try booting in safe mode and see how it goes....if it runs fine do a virus and spyware scan

This is screwed, how do you get into Safe mode in boot up again?, was it Alt+F2 or something like that? Ta.

Just before the windows logo comes up on boot...tap the F8 key, then select safe mode..
