Video Card advice

I want a video card that lasts me for a while, that'll be able to play any of the best games out right now and any recent upcoming games so that I don't have to update to quickly. My friend reckons I'll have to dish out $300 to get a good one. I noticed one in some catalouge, its reads

Ati Radeon 9550 256MB A6P, since I know nothing about video cards, can anyone suggest if this is any good. It's half the price my friend was talking about, (Aus dollars). Any help will be appreciated.

i would at least have a PCI - Express one, and a pretty new with with as much memory as possbible, because this ensures it mores future proof.

you COULD go with a geforce 6800GT. its a good card. my friend has it. thats what im gonna get.
