USB flash drive stopped working

Hey everyone. I hope this the right section to ask about this, but my micro sd usb is recognised but is not opening. When I try and open it it says that it is not formatted. When I try and format it, it doesn't work saying windows cannot format the drive. If I go to properties it doesn't tell me how big it is (says it is 0 bytes) and it has lost its original name. Does anybody know why this is? If so is there a fix?

Honestly, I had a thumb drive spaz out on me for awhile, I gave it a few good solid whacks on my desk and it's been fine ever since. Ever given the "slap it around a bit" method a try?

I gave the application a try but it said the usb was write protected. Maybe I have to take the write protection off?
I tried uninstalling the driver but when it installed again I got the same result.

Is there a little switch on the memory stick to lock and unlock it?

To clarify here, are we definitely talking about a thumb drive or is it an SD card / SD card reader?

It's an sd reader, and there is no switch on it.

Is there a tiny switch on the SD card itself?

Is the sd reader connected directly to the computer or does it have a removable/replaceable cable?

Make sure the switch is not set to "locked" ive had the same issue occur to me before.
