I have no idea really what a torrent is, my friend said it is like a big D/L ring but could someone here please explane it to me and also tell me if it is safe and if it is safe where to get it and how to download stuff, thanks, and sorry for being a noob

A torrent is a file on a server that is also on another computer(this user is called a seed), the downloader then downloads this file bit by bit from both the server and the user at the same time. If you had a lot of users trying to access the file it would allow the downloader to receive the file from these users and the server and to share the downloaded files with the other users.

It is used because it lets the server use less bandwidth than normal, this is why movies, OS/s and other large files are shared like this.
