Sony VaioPCG-6J1M win't shutdown / restarts

As I'm a regular lurker, I hope you guys don't mind if I ask this question here. (Posted elsewhere)

Machine has just been restored, and when asked to shutdown, it restarts.

I've googled, and have had no luck so far.

Has anyone got any ideas?

I've tried these sites

I've already use 'My Vaio' to update the machine.

I've applied XP SP3

No joy...

So let me get this straight,When you press the shutdown button (Start>Shutdown>Shutdown) it restarts? What happens if you go to start,go to run and type in "shutdown -s"?

no mention of legacy anything in the very basic bios

Hmmm,In the BIOS have you tried setting everything back to default? And has this just started happening?

I Think it might be some sort of registry problem?

defaulted everything in the BIOS, yup, tried that. This is a pre-existing problem.

see what happens if you hold down the power button until it shutsdown?

When you hold down the button on a laptop, it powers down alright
but creates a dirty shutdown, and can damage the OS which is doing house keeping tasks during a normal shutdown.

If I try to 'restart' the machine restarts. If I try to 'shutdown' the machine restarts.

have you tried Re-Installing Windows?
