I was wondering what Software would be good for making video game environments and models? Models as in character models (like some dude with cool armor with a sword in his hand). I wanted to make a "screenshot" like picture, but with sharp and complex graphics (clouds, shadows, rain, ect).
I was looking at this: http://www.afterworks.com/ (which are plugins, but I've heard 3DS Studio Max is good). If I ended up choosing 3DS Studio Max 7, should I buy those plugins? Which ones?

Comp Specs: 3.5GB DD2 Memory, Dual SLI 6800GT's, Asus P5ND2-SLI, 3.2Ghz Intel P4, Seagate 200GB Ultra 7200RPM 8MB HD.
Should I be getting one of those Raptors for what I'm doing? How much HD space do you think I need?
