Send ATA commands to external SATA

Does anyone know if/how one could send ATA commands to a SATA drive that is attached by PCMCIA, USB, or by some other interface?

I know that sending ATA commands across USB was unfortunately never standardized. There are sometimes proprietary techniques for doing so, but they are hardware specific and require information from the manufacturer on how to do it (either by extra drive firmware extensions or by extra USB ASIC protocol).

What I want to do exactly is send a FFD a series of commands to sanitize the drive under NSA standards.

It just seems that I can not send ANY ATA commands to the drive if it is attached externally. I know the commands work because when attached to the workstation's motherboard via SATA it does do in fact what I tell it to do.

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated:confused:
