Question on RAM (Dell Inspiron 9300 & Photoshop CS4)

I have a laptop...four-five years old, the Dell Inspiron 9300. I love Photoshop and have been trying to learn as much as I can with it, but I just don't have enough RAM. Years ago I am positive I installed more RAM to the standard 512MB it came with. But when I check my system information, it says "512mb RAM." If the RAM was installed properly, would it really display the new amount? As well, if I am only using 512mb, would it be worth the cost (about $60 it appears) to change over both slots to 1GB for a total of 2GB (max. amount supported by this laptop unfortunately)? Would 2GB be a vast improvement?

1.) Yes it would display the updated RAM
2.) I would just buy a 1gb module and add it to your pc to make it 1.5gb
