Processor Question

I have a compaq presario sr2020nx and Ive upgraded the ram and the gpu now im thinking of upgrading the cpu.

Ive check the specs by typing in the computer name at google and here they are.

Processor Brand: AMD

Processor Class: Athlon 64

Processor Number: 3500

Processor Speed: 2.20GHz

Processor Interface: AM2

Processors Supported: 1

Processors Onboard: 1

Additional Technologies: HyperTransport Technology

These are for the cpu obviously. Ive also ran cpu-z and did a dxdiag. Every time it says that I have a am2 940. Now does this mean that I can upgrade to a amd athlon dual core cpu and if so what would be the best choice.

buy retail as the OEM version dosent come with a cooler

the more you spend the faster it will be maybe not noticeably faster but it WILL be faster

Here is my next question. Do any of these cpus compete with a intel pentium D processor running a 2.80ghz with 4mbcach and 800mhz.

Are any of the amds that you showed me above in comparison to or better then.Then intel pentium D dual core processor.
