nVidia Driver Problems -- Constant Freezing

When I first got my computer, it came with a Nvidia Geforce 2 MX/MX 400 and a Nvidia 52.16 driver. It would constantly freeze any time there was a medium-to-high graphical situation. I downloaded the 53.03 driver from the Nvidia site and the freezing stopped. But then I ran Windows Update, and like a moron, I downloaded the driver 'update' from it. The 52.16 driver was back on my system and the freezing returned. I tried downloading other drivers, tried running some driver cleaning programs, tried uninstalling and reinstalling in safe mode, but nothing works. It's too late to roll back and too late to system restore. Can anyone shed some light on this situation? I'm desperate...

Hmm, tried just doing what you did before - installing the driver again?
