new laptop question

I just bought a new laptop and how do I print something from my printer that is downstairs. I have a desktop with a cable modem and a router downstairs. And that where the printer is. I want to be able print something from the laptop anywhere in the house. Thanks

I am using Vista. Will I have to keep my desktop on since that is the computer that is in direct connect with the printer. I would like to not keep my desktop on. Is there a way I can do this? Thanks again
