New to Computer Building Help Needed

Alright I am new to building computers and I plan on building one. So to the point how much money would be needed to build a decent desktop. So I am asking you (the experts) what do I need to build a computer?

Well I plan to use it for school because I am 16. My buget consists of 1000 dollars in U.S Currency. Hope I clarified what you guys needed to know.

School work as in word processing etc? wouldn't a laptop be best?

Yes but I heard that it is harder to build a laptop then a desktop

Laptop motherboards come in all shapes and sizes, as do chassis'

I have never seen anybody build their own laptop from scratch, ever.
