My XP desktop isn't recognizing my external hard drive.

I bought a external hard drive because my desktop's hard drive is full. When I plugged the hard drive into my XP; my computer did not recongized it. I tried updating my window, but still it does work. I have try he hard drive on my vista laptop and it works. Can someone please advise?

right click my computer, and click device manager, now click universal bus controllers and is their a hazord sort of looking sign?
