Hi there,

My Motherboard has this written on it: GA-8SIML (Rev 1.0)

I have 2 questions:

1) can someone confirm to me what maximum speed RAM it can take i.e. DDR 266mhz (PC2100) or upto DDR 400mhz (PC3200)

2) I currently have 512mb DDR 266mhz (PC2100). I can afford 1x1gb stick of RAM.

Which set up would be best:

setup 1
======
1x512mb DDR 266mhz (PC2100)
1x1gb DDR 266mhz (PC2100)

Totalling 1.5gb at 266mhz

or

setup 2
======
1x1gb DDR 400mhz PC3200 (assuming my motherboard can take it)

Totalling 1gb at 400mhz

would setup 1 or 2 give me better performance (more RAM at lower speed, or less RAM at higher speed)

Thanks,

AJ

or...

SETUP 3
======
1x512mb DDR 266mhz
1x512mb DDR 266mhz

(I think I read somewhere that a pair of the same speed sticks of RAM works better than 1 stick of RAM on its own)

-------------------------------------------------
System Memory

* Supports 2 memory slots.
* Serial Presence Detect (SPD) support.
* Supports a maximum memory size of 1GB (using 2x512 MB memory modules).
* Support only 2.5 V DIMM DDRAM configurations.
* Unbuffered type support.
* 266 Mhz DDR interface.
-------------------------------------------------

So 2x 512 ddr266 would be the best.
U can also get faster ram, but it will still work at 266. Getting faster ram is smart only if u are overclocking, if u are not then there is no difference.

excellent - thanks for that. I'll just purchase another 512mb DDR 266 then.

I've read mixed reports about the motherboard - one site said maximum memory of 1gb, another said max 2x1gb and another even said 3gb which is crazy.

At least I now know the absolute max is 2x512mb.

thanks very much.

LOL I still got some time before I can upgrade that much lol, 4 slots @ 1GB each $$

righty then.. I'll go ahead with SETUP 1 :D

thanks for all the advice.
