Motherboard prices?

I want to build a high-end computer but I'm stuck on the motherboard.

I have no clue about motherboards but the basics (slots, sockets and all that crap).

Should I just buy an expensive M/B or a will a cheap one do just as well?

And, in your opinion, how much should I be paying for a motherboard that unlocks the full potential of my computer (I will be getting at least AMD Athlon 64 3200+ ).

I am English so could I have english-people replying please (not that I have anything against forgeiners it's just prices are different).
