Installing RAM Question

Me --- Again.

I've recently scoped out some Dell 4600i RAM from a place called Computermemoryoutlet without many reviews but all of the ones I did see were very positive. I have a question, inside my PC I have two 512 MB sticks, can I pair them together (since, they are now in seperate banks) and order the 1 GB stick, and have it like this

BANK 1

Slot 1 - 1GB Stick
Slot 2 - Empty

BANK 2

Slot 1 - 512 MB Stick
Slot 2 - 512 MB Stick

And then, when I get enough money, get the second 1GB Stick to fill the second slot? Will this work? My PC could really use the boost! Will my PC be able to run like the above configuration?

I'm sorry but BUMP! I need help! My computer stats are thus:

~2.8 GHz Processor, Pentium 4 w/ Hyperthreading
450 GB of HD Space
1 GB of RAM (hopefully to be 2 then 3!)
Dell Dimension 4600i

Please help!
