Increasing my wireless range?!?!

Alright... so heres the situation.

I live across the street from my school campus which has free wireless internet all over, all you have to have is your school login and pw and you can access the net. I currently have a D-link wireless card and i can pick up the network on my list of available networks, the only problem is the signal isnt strong enough to connect to. I have already tried buying the "RangeMax Wireless USB 2.0 Adapter" made by netgear in hopes of boosting my range of reception but had no luck. Is there any hardware or maybe even software that i could buy to fix my problem? Maybe even a better wireless card?

I think im going to give that cantenna a try, i dont have the tools to make my own or the time for that matter since school will be starting wednesday. Do you guys honestly think this will solve my problem though, because i know it will most likely be a pain in the ass to return. Also how does it hook up to the card? you just screw it on where the antenna comes out of my card?
