Hard freezes during graphically intense situations

I built my computer about a year ago and wasn't having any problems with it until my first SSD died due to a brown out. After replacing it my computer began to occasionally freeze when playing games (and usually only the more graphically demanding ones like BF3, Witcher 2, SC2, etc.) or even when watching 1080p video on youtube.

I don't get a blue screen or anything. The computer just spontaneously locks up completely with whatever sound had been playing at that exact moment stuck on (so it's generally a screeching/cracking sound). The screen continues to display whatever I was doing. It's not looping the sound or anything, it just completely stops. Only way to get out is to reboot.

I've been good about updating drivers, etc. so I really don't know what could be causing this. On the one hand, it started when I got the new SSD. On the other, it seems to be caused by my graphics cards.

I think so. I set it up the same way I did the first one and don't know what settings I could get wrong. Also I should have noted that most games are run off HDs in RAID0, NOT my SSD which is primarily used as my boot drive and for some commonly used applications. This is one reason that I believe the fault doesn't lie with the SSD itself.

Make sure the fan on the graphics card is functioning and the heat sink is free of dust. I have seen overheating GPUs exhibit this same behavior.

I've seen this as well. Also check your PSU, they can overheat as well...

You know, i get a similar problem with my computer whenever i play battlefield 3. Before i was using a radeon hd 6790 for my gpu and no problems what so ever and then i upgrade to crossfired hd 6950s and now whenever i play battlefield 3 there is a chance that it will freeze up and i would need to do a hard shutdown. No BSOD just freezes up and i cant get out or anything. Im interested to see what you get for a solution.
