Framerate flashing in corner of video & can't make it go away!

Just recently I noticed that regardless of the file extension (.mpg, .avi, .wmv, etc.) and regardless of the playback program (windows media, nero showtime, power dvd, etc.) there is a flashing number in the upper right hand corner of the video and I cannot seem to make it go away. I have figured out that this number corresponds to the framerate, but I cannot seem to determine how to get rid of it. It is really quite annoying. So any help is much appreciated. Thank you!

hmm.... is it possibly just the video your watching? cause I don't have that problem... could you possibly take a picture of it when it's running?

This problem is present in many different video files that I have played. I tried to use the capture frame feature in several different programs and in all of them, the number does appear. So it is clearly some sort of framerate meter that is overlapping the video. Very strange, though.
