cpu temperatures

Can someone advise how often, if at all I should renew my heatsink
paste. Im running an AMD XP 3200 with a coolmaster turbo fan. I used
the paste provide with the fan and the normal running temp, even when
thrashing a quake engined game never went above 40c. The CPU now
runs at 40-43c even when doing no more than surfing the web and climbs to 48-50c when thrashing it. I bought some arctic silver but didnt use it. Is it worth using instead and if so will the other crap need a scrubbing brush to remove?? I may be worrying about nothing. but it might be the cause of several hangs and crashes which have started to occur regularly on a once stable system.

Any advice will be much appreciated

Dave

Use the Artic Silver, it will help out. Also make sure that the fan is mounted squarely and is running at its recommended speeds.

To remove the CRAPPY thermal compund, use a quTip and some rubbing alcohol (not too much) then once it its off, blow gently through your shirt onto the chip to dry the alcohol. Then apply a THIN layer on the artic silver and remount CAREFULLY and ACCURATELY the cooler and you should be good (provided the Coolermaster Turbo fan is running properly)
