Cooling laptop?

My laptop gets hot on the bottom all the time now, even on hard surfaces. Two years of continued use on my lap/carpet/bed/other soft surfaces probably screwed up the thing. Regardless, I can't seem to keep it cool. I remember reading about laptop coolers or something? Do they work? How do they work? Does anyone have any recommendations on ways to cool my laptop without having to spend a lot of money?

They're just stands that you put your laptop on. They have a fan or two and cool it from underneath. Here's one:
