connecting to xbox live with a adsl modem?

well i have aliant and i just just bought an xbox live package only to find that i can't connect to xbox live with my asdl modem, now what? what do i get so that i can connect to xbox live? how much is this going to cost me? this really sucks because i was looking forward to playing this today, i am not right smart with computers so try not to get too technical on me
