Compaq 1700 Armada Laptop

I am encountering problems with my laptop .
The bottom of the laptop near the hard drive gets warm and the screen gradually loses the picture . Finally the screen goes white .
Could anyone please tell me :
(a)Why the screen goes blank
(b) Is there a way of restoring the picture to the screen without switching off .

I would be grateful for any assistance anyone can give .

Are all your fans etc working to keep it cool? How hot are we talking about?

Fan appears to be working . Gets hot but not quite hot enough to burn

Very interesting. IT should not be getting that hot!
Are all the vents clear? You will need someway of cooling this system and then will fix you white screen problem.

It shouldn't be getting that hot - but it shouldn't be doing too much to the screen unless there is something wrong with that as well; my sister leaves her computer on her bed and it gets very hot indeed, again not burning hot but still and nothing happens to the screen.

How old is the Laptop?
