Can Virus/Trojans Move or Infect from Partition to Partition?

I have windows XP on 2 partitions on one Drive and I'm only one one of the partitions now cause the first one got really fudged up. So can a virus I got on the first partition infect my other one?

I believe it can only happen if you transfer the infected file or program over.

I agree with atomic rooster. I often install infected drives into my HDD caddy to clear them of viruses etc, and ive never had anything transfer to my system.
